National Highways
India’s National Highways form an extensive network of major roads managed by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. These highways link key cities, towns, ports, and other critical locations across states, and many extend to neighboring countries. While most highways are four-lane roads, many sections are being upgraded to six lanes or more to accommodate growing traffic needs. Although National Highways make up only 2.7% of India’s total road network, they are vital to the country’s connectivity and economic growth.

Major District Roads (MDR) serve as critical links within districts, connecting markets, production areas, and other local hubs to State or National Highways and railway stations. These roads are designed with lower speed limits and geometric specifications compared to National or State Highways, ensuring accessibility to remote and rural areas while supporting local commerce and transportation.These roads connect rural areas of production to market centres, or other main roads.
